Last Saturday’s Come Up was an amazing time.  Thanks to all that came through.  Special thanks to guests Concise and Frank(E) from the Rhythm Section, to the birthday celebrants in the crowd, and the the crew.  Can’t forget to thank all the people that sang along to Michael when his songs came on.

The next Come Up is July 25.

RIP

By now everyone has probably heard about yesterday’s passing of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.  I’d like to take a short moment to share how Mike has effected me, and I’m sure the rest of the Come Up Crew.  As a DJ, no matter where I was, no matter what type of party or people, whenever I played anything from Mike or the Jackson 5, the crowd would go crazy.  He is the ultimate secret move, a bonafied WMD for the dance floor.  Whether I was struggling with a crowd or looking to push the energy over the top, it’s always a good time to play some Michael.  Lastly, I’d like to share this flowchart of MJ samples in Hip Hop, courtesy of Nah Right.  From Tupac to Kanye, Bjork to Ginuwine, Mike’s catalog has been in prolific sample use.  Everyone knows about the international influence and the acclaim and the eccentricities, but don’t sleep on the man’s contribution to rap beats.

With that said, I will not personally be making a tribute mix to the man.  Spingineer may have one in the works.  But for right now, I recommend any or all of these recent mixes, all by very amazing DJ’s.

DJ Ayres - Michael Jackson Mix
Jaycee - Michael Jackson: The Soulful Years
J. Period - MJ Tribute

And I guess we will be  playing some MJ tomorrow night at The Come Up.

About DJ Frank(E)

I met Frank a while ago at a park jam in Placentia of all places.  He spun right before me and got me shook.  From flipping funk doubles to playing classics to playing American Boy months before it got popular, dude was on point.  He’s played at a ton of places, is currently holding down residencies in Fullerton, Downtown LA, and Silverlake, and has and abundance of experience.  He will no doubt bring the fire to The Come Up this Saturday, June 27, along with fellow Rhythm Section resident Concise.

Here’s a sample of Frank’s depth in a mix he did for The Noise Academy’s monthly series.

About DJ Concise

Concise has been holding down The Rhythm Section, one of LA’s best nights, for a little over the year now.  While I have unfortunately never had the pleasure of attending one of their nights, I constantly hear about how eclectic the music is, how great the people are, and how fun the night is.  And trust that their nights are always packed.  Come get a taste of what that’s all about this Saturday at The Come Up, featuring Concise and fellow Rhythm Section resident Frank(E).

Here is the first in a series of live mixes done by Concise for podomatic. Check out the whole series at livemixsessionsbydjconcise.podomatic.com.
