Come Up Crew members Siik and myself, LinoType, are the guests next week at Phatty’s soul monthly, Devil’s Pie. Devil’s Pie has been throwing down for a few months now, and it’s always a feel good night. It’s not strictly a soul night, but definitely a night to play music from your soul. Siik will be featuring a lot of his remixes, new old and unreleased (GASP). He should also have copies of his Endless Summer mix CD on hand for all the diehards.
Can’t forget to mention that it’s free, there are free music giveaways, and free desserts! Fall through. Hit the jump for full details.
H-Town. I don’t have any urge to ever go there but for some reason I am obsessed with the rap scene. It’s not the usual stuff I listen to and it is in no way lyrically above the rest or even close to that but for some reason I’m in awe of the tracks that Houston artists put out. Whether it’s music about the hood, drugs, fly honies, rims, cash, or purple syrup I can’t help but give all my attention and leave my ears wide open. I think its the swagger that Houston artists have mixed with decent lyrics that keep them forever present in the rap game. I have been listening to H-Town rap since I was a kid and the Geto Boys were on and since then I have never felt that the scene fell off or was performing subpar as has been the case in the Bay and even NY. No matter how you feel about H-Town rap, as compared to other rap scenes and sub-genres, the music is great, the lyrics are catchy, the MCs tell the story well, and the tracks are consistent as hell. Much love H-Town.
For all the inquisitors, The Come Up is officially on hiatus for the moment. We’re taking the time off to learn, grow, and meditate, in order to bring you all the best events in Los Angeles when we regroup later this year!
Special thanks to the Terrace, the DJ’s, the promoters, and all the party people for giving us the time of our lives.
Come Up Crew residents Spingineer, Mike Deuce, LinoType, and Siik will also be holding it down as usual.
Don’t forget that this will also be the last Come Up at the Terrace in Pasadena. After this month we will take a shot hiatus, so make sure to get your Come Up fix this weekend!

DJ Jedi has had a very full career thus far. While touring with Digable Planets, Jedi has done every major festival, from Coachella in Indio to Sonar in Barcelona. He’s toured the country as the DJ for the Def Poetry tour, he’s won an Emmy, and is currently a resident the legendary Root Down crew and the Modern Audio Collective (with J-Logic and Dam Funk).
In his own words:
While Jedi’s influences may stem primarily from hip hop culture, he also carries a deeply rooted appreciation for the classic soul, funk, jazz, rock, dance, and pop music that hip hop so heavily draws from. He believes strongly in the power of music to bring people of different cultures and backgrounds together in ways that they otherwise wouldn’t, and is never too proud to whore out his services for weddings, bar mitzvahs, industry showcases, and birthday parties.
With that said, make sure to check out DJ Jedi this Saturday at The Come Up. Check out this mix from last week’s Do Over, where he was one of the guests.
